Before having children I was a wine and beer kinda gal. Now, in my thirties with a family, I have become a liquor kind a gal. There's just something about a stiff cocktail at the end of the work week.
It wasn't until recently that my husband and I discovered whiskey. I was always kind of intimidated by it. I love cooking with it, but rarely drank it. That is until I came across Whiskey5.com. This site pairs your flavor profile with a delicious whiskey brand.
Personally when picking a cocktail, I prefer something smooth and silky. My husband however prefers a smoky/spicy blend. Lucky for us, we can agree upon one thing: whiskey soaked cherries are utterly delicious!
What is Whiskey?
Quite simply, whiskey is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermenting a grain mash. The mash can be comprised of a variety of grains, including corn, barley, wheat and rye.
For a whiskey to be considered bourbon, the grain mash must be at least 51 percent corn. In addition, it is required by law that it cannot contain any additives and must be stored in a charred oak container.
Why You'll Love Whiskey Soaked Cherries
- Whiskey soaked cherries are super easy to make. All that's needed is a handful of simple ingredients and a handy cherry pitting tool to prep your cherries.
- They will last for up to 3 months when stored in the fridge. Talk about a great way to get ahead on your holiday gifting! Assuming you have the will power to not let devour these delectable treats yourself.
After discovering that my husband's flavor profile perfect match is the spicy and bold Bulleit Rye Whiskey, I did a little research. It contains a 95% rye mash bill that imparts hints of vanilla, dried fruit and spice with a clean, dry finish. Perfect for making these amazing Whiskey Soaked Cherries!
How To Make Whiskey Soaked Cherries
Start by making a simple syrup using whiskey (or bourbon or rye) and sugar. Once cool, pour the syrup into a jar full of pitted and stemmed cherries. Allow the cherries to marinate in the syrup for a few days before using.
We happen to really enjoy using these cherries as a topping for ice cream or cheesecake (yum!). We also indulge in them on their own, as they are a perfect after-dinner solution when you're craving dessert, but also want to enjoy a cocktail. And speaking of cocktails, we also love to add these bourbon cherries as a garnish to our Old Fashioneds.
Yep, these whiskey soaked cherries perfectly complement the smooth and sweet flavor of a classic Old Fashioned. I made this drink for my husband using Bulleit Rye and he was very impressed.
