FAQs
What are Rum Balls?
Rum balls are a delectable no-bake sweet treat made with crushed cookies, chocolate and rum. Somewhere between a candy and a cake, these golf ball size treats are a popular dessert. And in many parts of the world, these German rums balls are an important par of the Christmas holiday season and the perfect addition to your next holiday party.
Will Rum Balls Get You Drunk?
Technically speaking it is possible, since these rum balls do contain alcohol. But the likelihood of getting drunk from eating them is minimal, because this recipe calls for just ⅓ cup of rum, which is combined with other ingredients and then divided up into 20 different candies.
However, it is important to note that this dessert is intended to be enjoyed responsibly and by those who are age 21 and over only.
What is The Best Rum To Use for Making Rum Balls?
I recommend using dark rum to make these chocolate rum balls. Since dark rum is aged longer, it is more flavorful. And because some brands of dark rum also contain molasses or burnt sugar, which adds another level of flavor. This is why adding a little bit of rum will go a long way when making these tasty treats! You can also use bourbon to make bourbon balls or rum extract to make them non alcoholic.
How To Store These Delicious Treats
Place rum balls in an airtight container separating each layer with parchment paper. Keep them in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or on the counter in a cool dry spot for 4-5 days.
