Making dinner every night can become extremely repetitive. When you have kids and are dealing with homework, sports, bath time, etc, by the end of the night our goal is to simply get food on the table. I reserve the elaborate cooking for the weekends. The nice thing about simple meals, such as ground beef and rice, is that you can spice it up!
I absolutely love Indian food and have a great appreciation for their spices. My uncle (by marriage) is from India and he has been teaching me how to cook. One of the spices that he recently introduced me to was Garam Masala. This aromatic spice is a combination of cumin, coriander, cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. It is wonderful on meats, veggies, hash browns, and anything else you can think of!
Last week I was in a rut. I was in a hurry to make dinner and only had ground beef and rice. I knew that would be too boring for the family so I used a few spices. I combined Cumin, Garam Masala, Paprika, and Chili powder. Guys, this was the most delicious earthy, slightly spicy ground beef ever!!!
Now lets talk veggies for a sec. I am notorious for buying a ton of fruits and vegetables on sale then having to give them to the chickens because they have gone bad. Now, I stick with frozen C&W Vegetables. They are quick, easy, fresh, and never go bad! Whenever I am at Walmart, I stock up on our frozen favorites. It is so easy to pull a bag of petite peas from the freezer and add them to the Indian Spiced Ground beef. Not only did the peas add sweetness, but they also added a beautiful green component to the dish.
So if you are in a dinner making rut and need to explore with your tastebuds, make this meal. It is healthy and will take you about the same time it takes to cook your rice. Enjoy!

- I tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon garam masala
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- Cooked Rice for serving
- In a large skillet, heat oil on medium high heat.
- Add onions and garlic and cook until translucent.
- Add ginger to the pan.
- Add ground beef, breaking up lumps with a spoon.
- Sprinkle all spices on the meat and gently turn to incorporate.
- Cook meat until no longer pink.
- Pour peas into pan and stir to combine.
- Continue to cook on medium low heat until peas are warm, about 5 minutes.
- Serve over rice and sprinkle with cilantro.
